  11. I. Introductions

  13. Joyce Reynolds opened the session with an overview of how this session
  14. was initiated.  A notice was recently posted that the whois protocol has
  15. been accepted as an Internet Standard.  This prompted Russ Hobby, Area
  16. Director for Applications, to ask the Internet community for examples of
  17. working whois services.  A list of about 80 servers was generated.
  18. Staff at the University of California, Davis looked at each of these
  19. servers and produced a working paper describing valuable new features
  20. found in these servers and additions to the protocol that would enhance
  21. its usefulness.

  25. A brief review of current whois servers and valuable features was
  26. presented, based upon the discussion paper.  Topics included:

  30.    o Review of information content

  33.    o Definition of desired information content
  34.

  41. III. Review/Discussion of Draft Working Group Charter
  42.  
  43. A lengthy discussion followed regarding the role of the whois Working
  44. Group in relation to the X.500 Directory Services Working Group.
  45. Several members of the Group felt no further work on the whois protocol
  46. should be done as it would detract from work on the X.500 Directory
  47. Service.  In rebuttal, several members of the Group felt there was a
  48. role for whois, especially since there are many working servers, and
  49. this effort would add value to an existing standard protocol.  It was
  50. argued that it was consistent with IETF philosophy to allow the
  51. development of more than one protocol to perform similar services and to
  52. let the Internet community choose which one to use.

  54. Joyce Reynolds brought the focus of the Group back to the issue of the
  55. Working Group Gharter and how the whois work would proceed.  Members of
  56.

  63. the Group originally objecting to continued work on whois, agreed with
  64. the Charter presented at the meeting if ``Directory Services'' was
  65. removed from the Working Group name.  The Working Group name was changed
  66. to ``Whois and Network Information Lookup Services'' and the Charter was
  67. approved for forwarding to the User Services Area.
